# Capabilities: What we do

## Five capabilities. Applied in sequence or in isolation.

Blackletter Lab delivers five core capabilities for Australian professional services firms: agentic AI, data infrastructure, reporting and business intelligence, workflow automation, and system integration. We work with a small number of firms at a time; some engagements have a clear finish line, others grow into something ongoing.

### Agentic AI

AI systems that take on real work: processing documents, triaging tasks, extracting and moving information, with humans remaining in control of decisions that matter. We design, build, and operate these systems in production environments, not just proof-of-concept.

- Document processing and classification at scale
- Intelligent task triage and routing
- Data extraction from unstructured legal documents
- Human-in-the-loop decision frameworks
- Production-grade deployment and monitoring

### Data Infrastructure

Firms generate enormous amounts of data and use almost none of it. We build the infrastructure that makes it accessible, reliable, and useful.

- Data warehouse design and implementation
- ETL pipeline development
- Data quality and governance frameworks
- Cloud-native architecture
- Legacy system data migration

### Reporting & Business Intelligence

The numbers that matter, when you need them. We design and build reporting systems that give partners and management a clear view of how the firm is performing, without the manual work.

- Executive dashboards and KPI tracking
- Financial performance reporting
- Matter profitability analysis
- Automated report generation
- Self-service analytics platforms

### Workflow Automation

Repetitive, rule-based processes are expensive when done by hand. We identify where automation adds the most value and build the systems to deliver it.

- Process mapping and optimisation
- Robotic process automation (RPA)
- Document assembly and generation
- Approval workflow digitisation
- Client onboarding automation

### System Integration

Most firms run multiple platforms that don't talk to each other. We connect them: practice management, accounting, document management, and whatever else sits in the stack.

- API development and management
- Practice management system integration
- Accounting system connectivity
- Document management interoperability
- Custom middleware solutions

## How we work: both founders, every engagement

Every engagement involves both founders. You're not paying for a junior team with senior oversight. You're working directly with the two people who built this firm and have done this work throughout their careers. That doesn't change as we grow.

### 01 · Build & deliver: Custom systems for the way your firm actually works.

From agentic AI to data infrastructure, reporting and integrations, we design and build the systems your firm needs. Engineered for production, not proof-of-concept.

Typical project work:

- Agentic AI for specific workflows and tasks
- Workflow automation and matter lifecycle tooling
- Partner and management reporting dashboards
- System integrations and data pipelines
- Data infrastructure and normalisation
- Custom integrations with your existing PMS and accounting systems

This tends to suit firms that know something isn't working but don't have the internal capability to build a fix, or have been quoted something off-the-shelf that doesn't actually fit how they operate.

### 02 · Run & advise: An ongoing technology partner who stays in the room.

An ongoing relationship where we run your systems, solve problems as they surface, and stay involved in the technology decisions that shape how your firm runs.

What's included:

- Operation and monitoring of all systems we've built
- Continuous problem-solving as issues surface
- Regular business reviews and written progress updates
- 12-month operational roadmap, refreshed regularly
- Vendor evaluation: we review pitches so you don't have to
- Annual outcomes report quantifying value delivered

This tends to suit firms that have ambitions for where the firm is going and want technology keeping pace with them, not falling behind.

## Common questions

### What does Blackletter Lab actually build?

We design, build and operate the systems behind a firm's day-to-day work across five capabilities: agentic AI, data infrastructure, reporting and business intelligence, workflow automation, and system integration. In practice that means AI that does real work, a reliable single source of truth for your data, dashboards partners actually use, automated handoffs between platforms, and the integrations that make your existing tools talk to each other.

### Can we use one capability on its own, or do they come as a package?

Either. The five capabilities are designed to work in sequence (data infrastructure first, then reporting, automation and AI layered on top), but each can be applied in isolation. Most firms start with a single pressing problem and expand once they see results.

### Do you follow responsible-AI standards?

Yes. Our agentic AI work is built to be transparent, accountable and human-in-the-loop, consistent with [Australia's AI Ethics Principles](https://www.industry.gov.au/publications/australias-artificial-intelligence-ethics-principles). A person stays in control of any decision that affects a client or a matter, and we monitor systems in production rather than shipping proof-of-concept and walking away.

### Which capability should we start with?

Usually data infrastructure. Reporting, automation and AI are only as good as the data underneath them, so we tend to get that foundation right first. If your data is already clean and accessible, we can start higher up the stack with reporting, automation or AI.
